On Sunday morning we wanted to arrange some things in the city. Taking a stroll, we have heard from a distance some music so we tried to recall our memories surprisedly what kind of carnivals or festivals were taking place in the city. We did not have to wait long for the answer: when we wanted to cross the street at the corner of Charlottenburg palace, it was simply impossible as runners covered the main street of Schlossstraße. After waiting half on hour, we took our courage and chance to utilize a narrow gap accross the floating people and we sprinted successfully to the opposite side. However, it was worth waiting for a while. People were chatting and watching happily the running competitors, cheering enthusiasticly for and encouraging persistent runners. Some bands played music and drummed in the background ensuring a dynamic and relaxed atmosphere. Even some people with wheelchair and beer-costumed participants nominated for the race. It seemed to be a great Berliner mass event.
After a short Google research we found out that we were watching the 37th edition of the Berlin Half Marathon in that more than 34.000 athletes made their way to across Berlin. The 21.0975-kilometer-long circuit led the runners and inline skaters past some of the city’s most distinctive points: Alexanderplatz, Berlin Cathedral, Unter den Linden, Brandenburg Gate, Great Star, Ernst Reuter Square, Charlottenburg Palace, Kurfürstendamm, Potsdamer Platz and Friedrichstrasse with the former Checkpoint Charlie.
The Berliner Halbmarathon is not only the largest German run of its kind, but also the most prestigious. It belongs to the fixed repertoire of the Berlin run events and attracts international runners.
The next big Berlin Marathon event will take traditionally on the last weekend of September 2017. More than 40,000 participants (runners) take part in the Berlin Marathon every year. They come from around 120 countries, according to international and colorful the participants and spectators.
